Fringe programme well received by fair attendees
New records for exhibitor and visitor attendance were set at Prolight + Sound Guangzhou, China’s largest pro audio and lighting show, which was held 24 – 27 February 2014 at the China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou.
The 1,138 exhibitors were busy throughout the four-day event which saw 60,068 of visitors at the show. The increase in exhibitors and visitors represents a 23.4% and 24.2% growth respectively compared to the 2013 show
Commenting on the show’s success, Ms Fiona Chiew, Deputy General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co Ltd said: “The significant growth in numbers is a promising sign that the show is developing in the right direction. A majority of exhibitors and visitors also noticed that the show’s organisation, exhibit quality, brand variety, internationalism and energetic business atmosphere had improved quite a lot.”
Mr Hanrong Wu, Director of Guangdong International Science and Technology Exhibition Company (STE) added: “Moving forward, we hope Prolight + Sound Guangzhou continues to deliver the best business platform for professional audio and lighting market in China.”
Exhibitors and visitors impressed by show development
An increased number of international brands from 25 countries and regions took part in the 2014 event. These brands included ADJ, AKG, Allen & Heath, audio-technica, Avid, Beyerdynamic, Bose, D.A.S., Db Technologies, FBT, HARMAN, JBL, JTS, König & Meyer (K&M), L-Acoustics, LaserWorld, Martin Audio, Martin Professional, McCauley, Meyer Sound, NEXO, Philips, Proel, Sennheiser, SHURE, SOUNDKING, Studiomaster, TASCAM, TC Electronic, TEAC, TWAUDiO and YAMAHA. The countries and regions represented were Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, the UK and the US
Many were newcomers to the show, including dB Technologies from Italy. The company’s Export Manager Mr Gianluca Dalessandro said: “It’s a very good show to be in. This is the first time we have showed new technologies with our new distributor. People are positive about our brand. We have seen customers from China, Asia Pacific, Canada and Latin America. The China market is quite complicated but a brand like ours can have a very good development here, just like how we are doing in the rest of the world.”
Leading brands believed the show is an ideal platform to reveal their new products to the market. Chinese agent for Sennheiser, ARTSOUND International Development Co Ltd launched their new headphones for professional DJs at the show. Marketing Director Mr Rio Li said: “It’s the best place to launch our new products to the Chinese market as this is the biggest trade event in the country. At a big show like this we can meet with many buyers and demonstrate the advantages of Sennheiser’s products which ultimately increase our market share.”
As a well recognised industry event, Prolight + Sound Guangzhou offered brands a good opportunity to reach the fast growing Chinese market. This is why Mr Andrew Kong, Marketing Manager for Martin Professional (HK) Ltd joined the fair. He said: “The show is right in the centre of the China audio industry. I think China’s entertainment market is huge. This is where the international brands should be in.”
Mr Karl-Heinz Käs, Managing Director for RTI Display Laser Systems from Switzerland also saw the exponential opportunity in China. He commented: “China is a big market. We now sell more in the Asian market than Europe. Chinese people rely on foreign brands because they see that it doesn’t make sense just to focus on the price and then having a failure in the show. The Chinese market is important for us because you can’t find big-scale shows anywhere else.”
Many exhibitors noticed the show has become more international since cooperating with Messe Frankfurt. One such company is Nightsun Pro Lighting Equipment Co Ltd from China. Representing the company, Mr Xin Liao commented: “We have seen more international buyers this time, especially from South America. This is a new market which we intended to expand our business to and we have engaged in serious discussions with some of them. I think the show is a must-attend event for the industry and certainly we will return next year.”
The show’s ideal location in Guangzhou attracted buyers worldwide to source in the pro audio and lighting products manufacturing hub. This year’s international visitors have increased by 24.5% compared to the 2013 edition.
First time visitor from the US, Mr Gary Moran, a stagehand for the San Francisco Convention Centre said: “You have pretty much everything here from the beginning to the end of production of a show such as trussing and motors, the distribution and connections. The quality of Chinese products is very good. I wanted to see what’s new so that when the products come to the US I have a better understanding.”
German buyer Mr Victor Wiesner, Product Manager Pro Audio/Purchasing for Adam Hall GmbH is a regular visitor to the show. He commented: “I have been to this show three or four times. We are a big distributor for wireless microphones, amplifiers and speakers and I come to China to look for possible suppliers and products. They have become so much better in the last 10 years. The show is important because in China all the manufacturers can get all the parts from the local market which is good for us to manufacture in China.”
Mexican audio systems manufacturer Mr Miguel Topete, Director for Top Line added: “There are so many manufacturers here, and I can find them all in one place. If I didn’t visit this show it would take so many months to find contacts. Here I make contacts and next week I will visit factories.”
Mr Yande Qu, Audio Video Department Project Manager for Dalian Yunhe Technology Co Ltd from China found the show greatly improved from last year. He said: “I am looking for conference facilities and new products. There are more international brands and product variety this year which provide a wider sourcing option for us.” Mr Tao Wu representing Shenzhen Shijue Yuansu added: “This show is an important industry event. You get to see everyone here, learn about new products and market updates, and to discuss with our existing suppliers.”
Fringe programme well received by fair attendees
During Prolight + Sound Guangzhou, visitors and exhibitors had the chance to participate in a variety of fringe programmes. Lighting Technology for Television Broadcasting Studio Forum 2014 was well attended by TV station heads, engineers and lighting technicians who exchanged their views about television and stage lighting. One of the speakers Mr Andreas Gause, Sales and Marketing Director of Gerriets GmbH, Germany commented: “I think it’s a good networking opportunity for me to introduce our latest technology while exchanging our experience with the local industry experts and sharing our knowledge with the audience.”
An equally popular event was the 4th edition Pro Audio Technology Seminar. Senior Engineer, Mr Guangzhou Li from Guangdong Television shared his audio and broadcasting technology knowledge with audio technicians and experts. He said: ‘The audience are very engaging. We are able to exchange industry knowledge through this platform and I hope a bigger seminar will be organised next year.” Audience member Mr Xiaoqin Wang, a technician for He Yuan Television added: “It’s an invaluable opportunity to learn new technologies from a national leading TV station which I can apply to my work.”
